D-Guard Long Seax Machete — 18-Inch Hand-Forged Viking-Style Chopper

The D-Guard Long Seax is a hand-forged D-guard seax machete — an 18-inch single-edged long-seax blade fitted with a full knuckle-guard, forged in Nepal from 5160 leaf-spring steel, full-tang and water-tempered. It is built as a working chopper for bushcraft, survival and heavy field use, with the reach and presence of a long seax sword and the hand protection of a D-guard.

The seax was the signature single-edged blade of the Saxons, Angles and Vikings — a do-everything sidearm carried from the Migration Period through the Viking Age. This piece takes that long-seax blade profile and adds something the originals never had: a full D-guard knuckle bow wrapped around the grip, for the kind of secure, protected hold you want when a blade this size is doing real cutting work.

At 18 inches of blade and around 950 grams, it swings like a heavy chopper but handles like a sidearm. Satin-finished or forge-raw, with a 6-inch full-tang rosewood handle, it is made to clear brush, split kindling, prep camp and stand up to repeated hard use — then hang on the wall looking like it earned its place there.

Honest note: the D-guard is a modern addition. No historical seax carried a knuckle bow — that is an 18th to 19th century feature. This is an original Everest Forge hybrid: an authentic long-seax blade with a modern D-guard, not a historically accurate replica. It is live steel — sharp, full-tang and functional, made for cutting, bushcraft, reenactment and display, but not for contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring. Want a period-correct hidden-tang seax instead? That is a custom build.

Why a D-Guard on a Seax?

A long single-edged chopper generates real force, and your hand sits right behind the edge. The D-guard — a steel knuckle bow running from guard to pommel — keeps your grip locked in and shields your knuckles during heavy swings or a slip in wet conditions. It is the same logic that put D-guards on Bowie knives and military fighting blades: more control, more protection, more confidence behind a big blade. Pair it with the long single-edged seax profile and strong point and you get a chopper that bites hard and stays comfortable through extended work.

Caring for Your High-Carbon Seax

5160 is a high-carbon steel and will surface-rust if neglected. Keep the blade dry, wipe it down after handling, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage. For long-term storage, keep the seax out of its scabbard so the edge stays dry. A quick re-oil now and then keeps the finish and edge in working condition for years.

D-Guard Long Seax — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a D-guard seax?

A D-guard seax is a single-edged long-seax blade fitted with a full steel knuckle guard — a D-shaped bow that runs from the guard to the pommel and shields the hand. It combines the single-edged chopping profile of a long seax with the grip security of a D-guard fighting knife, making it a heavy working blade rather than a pure historical piece.

Is the D-guard historically accurate?

No, and we say so plainly. Historical seaxes did not have D-guards; the knuckle bow is an 18th to 19th century feature. This is an original Everest Forge hybrid — an authentic long-seax blade with a modern D-guard added. If you want a period-correct seax, choose a hidden-tang custom build instead.

Is this a sword or a machete?

It sits between the two. At 18 inches and around 950 grams it has the reach of a short sword but is built and balanced as a working machete and chopper. We position it as a machete because that is what it does best — heavy cutting, brush clearing and survival work.

What steel is it made from, and is it full tang?

It is hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon leaf-spring steel, water-tempered for toughness and edge retention, and built full-tang for strength and balance. That makes it a functional working blade, not a display-only piece.

Does it come sharpened and ready to use?

Yes. Each blade is hand-sharpened and ready to use on arrival. It is live steel — sharp and functional — so it is not suited to contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring.

What blade lengths can I order?

The standard blade is 18 inches. You can order it from 16 inches up to 24 inches, depending on whether you want a faster sidearm or a heavier two-hand-capable chopper.

Can I choose the handle and scabbard?

Yes. Handles come in rosewood, white-wood, horn, bone and combinations, and the yak-leather scabbard is available in six colours: black, brown, yellow, red, green and blue.

Can I personalise or engrave it?

Yes. You can add a name, initials or a short message, or upload a logo or photo for custom engraving. Personalisation is included at no extra charge on standard builds.

Is it good for bushcraft and survival chopping?

Yes — that is its core job. The heavy single-edged blade and full-tang build handle brush clearing, batoning, camp prep and repeated hard cutting, while the D-guard keeps your hand protected through it all.

Does it come with a scabbard?

Yes. Every D-Guard Long Seax ships with a wooden-core scabbard wrapped in yak leather, in your chosen colour.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. We ship worldwide by tracked, insured DHL or FedEx with secure checkout. Please check edged-weapon import rules for your country before ordering, as they vary.

How do I care for the blade?

Keep this high-carbon blade dry, wipe it after handling, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage. For long-term storage keep it out of the scabbard so the edge stays dry, and re-oil occasionally to prevent surface rust.
