Chappe

Chappe – Functional and Decorative Scabbard Throat Cover

A chappe is a small but important component of a blade's scabbard, located at the throat where the blade enters. It acts as a protective collar, helping to guide the blade smoothly into the sheath while also reinforcing the scabbard’s opening. The chappe prevents wear and tear from repeated drawing and sheathing and can also help minimize moisture entry into the scabbard.

Chappes are typically made from thin sheets of brass, white metal, or occasionally horn or bone. They are shaped and fitted to match the top edge of the scabbard and may be secured with glue, stitching, or a metal sleeve. In many blades, especially kukris and ceremonial knives, the chappe adds a decorative finish to the scabbard.

Though often overlooked, the chappe is both a functional and aesthetic feature. It improves the longevity of the scabbard, enhances the overall blade presentation, and shows attention to detail in craftsmanship.
