Celtic Seax Sword — 18-Inch Hand-Forged Viking Seax with Celtic-Knot Etching & Bone Handle
This is a hand-forged Celtic seax sword — an 18-inch single-edged Viking-style seax forged in Nepal from 5160 leaf-spring steel, full-tang and water-tempered, with a band of Celtic-knot interlace etched down the blade and a rosewood-and-bone handle. Where most Celtic seaxes are belt knives, this is a true sword-length piece: a polished, functional long seax built to display and to cut.
Hand-forged to order in Kathmandu · Backed by 9 verified customer reviews
The seax was the single-edged blade of the Germanic world — Saxons, Angles and Norse Vikings alike. This one carries a band of Celtic knotwork etched along the spine, a nod to the shared interlace art of Celtic and Norse cultures. The result is a blade that reads as both heritage piece and centrepiece, with detail you do not usually find on a working seax.
The 18-inch polished blade sits on a full tang for strength, and the 6-inch handle joins warm rosewood with pale bone, pinned and set between a steel bolster and pommel. At around 620 grams it is light and quick in the hand. Drawn for reenactment, carried for bushcraft, or set on a stand, it earns its place either way.
Honest note: the seax is a Germanic, Saxon and Norse blade, not a Celtic weapon — the "Celtic" here is the knotwork etched on the blade, an original Everest Forge design inspired by Celtic and Norse interlace art rather than a museum-exact replica. It is live steel — sharp, full-tang and functional — made for cutting, reenactment, collection and display, but not for contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring. Want a specific historical seax recreated exactly? That is a custom build.

What sets this seax apart is the etching. A band of Celtic interlace runs down the polished spine of the blade — not stamped on the handle as an afterthought, but worked into the steel itself. It draws on the shared knotwork tradition of Celtic and Norse art, giving a single-edged Viking seax a distinctly decorative character while keeping the blade fully functional underneath. Paired with the two-tone rosewood-and-bone handle, it is built to stand out on a wall and still cut when you take it down.

Caring for Your High-Carbon Seax
5160 is a high-carbon steel and will surface-rust if neglected. Keep the blade dry, wipe it down after handling, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage — taking care to keep the etched band clean. For long-term storage, keep the seax out of its scabbard so the edge stays dry, and re-oil now and then to protect the finish and edge.

What is a Celtic seax?
A Celtic seax is a single-edged seax blade decorated with Celtic knotwork. The seax itself is a Germanic, Saxon and Norse blade; the Celtic element here is a band of interlace etched down the blade, drawing on the shared knotwork art of Celtic and Norse cultures. This one is an 18-inch sword-length version.
Is the seax actually a Celtic weapon?
Not historically — the seax belonged to the Saxons, Angles and Vikings rather than the Celts. We call this a Celtic seax because of the Celtic-knot etching on the blade, an original Everest Forge design inspired by Celtic and Norse interlace, not a claim of Celtic origin.
Is it a sword or a knife?
At 18 inches it is sword-length and handles as a single-edged short sword. Most Celtic seaxes on the market are belt knives of 8 to 12 inches; this is a true long seax, which is part of what sets it apart.
Where is the Celtic etching, and is it on the steel?
Yes. The Celtic knotwork is etched into the polished blade itself, running as a band down the spine — not printed on the handle. Choose a polished or mirror finish to show it off best.
What is the handle made from?
The standard handle joins warm rosewood with pale bone on a 6-inch full tang, set between a steel bolster and pommel. You can also order rosewood and white-wood, white-wood and bone, or horn and bone.
What steel is it made from, and is it full tang?
It is hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon leaf-spring steel, water-tempered for toughness and edge retention, and built full-tang for strength and balance. That makes it a functional working sword, not a display-only piece.
Does it come sharpened and ready to use?
Yes. Each blade is hand-sharpened and ready to use on arrival. It is live steel — sharp and functional — so it is not suited to contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring.
What blade lengths can I order?
The standard blade is 18 inches. You can order it from 16 inches up to 24 inches, depending on the reach and presence you want.
Does it come with a scabbard?
Yes. Every Celtic Seax Sword ships with a cottonwood-core scabbard wrapped in yak leather, in your chosen colour.
Can I personalise or engrave it?
Yes. You can add a name, initials or a short message, or upload a logo or photo for custom engraving. Personalisation is included at no extra charge on standard builds.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. We ship worldwide by tracked, insured DHL or FedEx with secure checkout. Please check edged-weapon import rules for your country before ordering, as they vary.
How do I care for the blade?
Keep this high-carbon blade dry, wipe it after handling, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage, keeping the etched band clean. For long-term storage keep it out of the scabbard so the edge stays dry, and re-oil occasionally to prevent surface rust.
