A Hand-Forged Rambo IV-Inspired Cleaver, Built the Way You Want It

Choose the blade finish, the handle, the fittings and the scabbard, add your engraving and choose where it sits — then we forge that exact blade. Every selection updates the preview on screen. There are 840 possible builds before personalisation, and each one is a knife our smiths in Kathmandu make routinely.

Underneath every combination is the same blade: 13 inches of hand-forged 5160 spring steel in a broad, forward-weighted cleaver profile with a thick spine, on a full tang running through a six-inch grip, carried in a hand-stitched leather scabbard. At 19 inches overall and around 1,100 grams it is the heaviest blade in our Rambo range — our unofficial tribute to the chopping blade from Rambo (2008).

The Blade from Rambo (2008)

By the fourth film the setting had moved to the jungles of the Burmese border, and Gil Hibben drew a blade to match it. He dropped the Bowie geometry of the third film entirely and designed a cleaver: broad, deep-bellied, heavy at the front and built to chop through green wood rather than to look good drawn from a sheath. It is the most divisive knife in the series among collectors and easily the most useful.

That is the honest way to read this page. If you want the blade people picture when they hear "Rambo knife", that is the third film's Bowie, and we build it too. If you want the one that does the most work, it is this. Our blog covers the history of the Rambo knife across all five films.

Why a Cleaver Chops Better Than a Bowie

Three things do the work. The blade is broad, so there is steel to carry weight without making the knife absurdly thick. The mass sits forward, ahead of your hand, so the blade arrives at the cut with momentum instead of you supplying it. And the spine is thick, so that mass goes through the wood rather than bouncing off it or flexing.

The trade is precision. A Bowie's clip point handles skinning, carving and fine work far better than a deep-bellied cleaver ever will. If you want one blade for camp that replaces a hatchet, this is it; if you want one blade that does everything moderately well, our Rambo III builder is the more versatile shape.

Which Blade Finish Suits a Working Chopper?

Raw ForgeDark fire scale left from the anvil with hammer texture, and a bright edge. The rugged look of the film blade, and chopping marks disappear into it.
Acid WashA mottled, stonewashed grey etched into the steel. Hides scratches and handling marks better than anything else here.
Black CoatedMatte black flats with a bright bare-steel edge. The most rust-resistant choice and the least reflective in the field.
SatinAn even brushed grain along the blade. The clean all-round working finish.
PolishedBright and mirror-like. The best for display, and the one a chopping blade will mark first.

Handle and Fittings

Seven grips are fitted to the same full tang. Rosewood is our standard: dense, stable and the best all-round choice for a blade that takes shock. Whitewood is pale and contrasts strongly with a dark blade. Buffalo horn is glossy black and takes a deep polish. Bone is the brightest, close to ivory, and the most collector-facing. The three two-material grips — rosewood + horn, rosewood + whitewood and whitewood + horn — pair contrasting sections along the handle; because two materials wear at slightly different rates, the softer section shows handling marks first on a hard-worked knife.

The fittings come in silver-tone, a bright white metal that stays bright longest; brass, warm gold and the classic partner for rosewood; copper, warmer and quickest to darken; and black, which gives the most tactical build alongside a black coated blade.

Engraving: Your Words, on the Blade or the Scabbard

This build carries a personalisation field. Type a name, initials, a unit, a service number, dates or a short line, and it is engraved before the knife ships. You can also upload a crest, an insignia, a logo or a photograph for us to reproduce.

Then choose the placement. On the blade is the reason many buyers pick this one for a commission: the broad cleaver flat is the largest engraving surface in our Rambo range, and detailed crests and long inscriptions reproduce well on it. On the scabbard keeps the steel plain, which suits a knife that will actually be used and sharpened. Choose No for an unmarked build. The preview shows the placement before you order.

Beyond These Options

Want a Different Size or a Design of Your Own?

A longer or shorter cleaver, a different grip material, a matched pair with another knife in the range, or an original chopping blade of your own design — anything outside this option list goes through our custom forge service, where we quote your build individually.

Why This Cleaver Works

Forward WeightThe mass sits ahead of your hand, so each swing does the work instead of your arm.
Thick SpineSolid steel along the back, so the blade drives through green wood without flexing.
Full TangOne unbroken piece of steel from point to butt, with the scales pinned through it — essential on a chopper.
5160 Spring SteelThe leaf-spring steel Nepali smiths have used for generations. It absorbs impact rather than chipping.
Sharp on ArrivalShips with a working edge unless you ask for a blunt build.
Forged to Your SheetYour configuration and your engraving reach the forge floor as a specification.

An Honest Note on This Cleaver

An honest note. Three things worth saying plainly. First, this is an unofficial tribute, not a licensed replica and not a measured copy of the film blade; licensed reproductions exist and are the right purchase if signed authenticity matters to you. Second, 1,100 grams is a lot of knife. That weight is the entire point — it is what makes the cleaver chop — but it is tiring for fine work, awkward for skinning, and more than most people want on a belt. It is a hatchet replacement, not an everyday knife. Third, 5160 is not stainless, and a chopping blade sees more weather than a knife that lives in a sheath: wipe it dry, keep a light film of oil on it, and check the handle pins after heavy sessions.

This Cleaver Suits

  • Camp and bush work where one blade has to replace a knife and a small hatchet
  • Clearing brush, limbing and splitting kindling
  • Engraved commissions that need a large, flat canvas
  • Collectors who want the 2008 film's blade, built their way

Look Elsewhere If

  • You want the classic Rambo silhouette — see the Rambo III or Part II builders
  • You want a knife for skinning and fine work
  • You want something light to carry — see the Rambo V builder
  • You want a stainless blade that tolerates neglect

How Your Order Is Made

You ConfigureChoose the finish, handle, fittings, scabbard, engraving and stand. The preview updates as you go.
We Write the Build SheetYour configuration and engraving reach the forge floor in Kathmandu as a specification, not a suggestion.
We Confirm and ForgeWe confirm the build by email and start forging. Preparation takes seven to ten days.
Your Cleaver ShipsYour cleaver ships tracked and arrives a further seven to ten days later.

Caring for Your Cleaver

Wipe the blade dry after every session and keep a light film of oil on it; mineral, machine or food-grade camellia oil all work. A chopping blade collects sap and moisture along its whole length, so cover the full flat rather than the middle. Check the handle pins occasionally, because a cleaver puts far more shock through the grip than a knife does. Do not store it in the scabbard for long periods, and condition the leather every few months. Sharpen at a slightly steeper angle than you would use on a slicing knife: a chopper needs a durable edge more than a keen one, and a fine edge will simply roll on hardwood.

Shipping, Returns and Warranty

Every piece is prepared at the forge in seven to ten days, and shipping adds a further seven to ten days. Orders to the USA and Canada travel with FedEx; everywhere else ships on a DDP service, which means duties and taxes are settled before the parcel moves so there is nothing to pay on delivery. Every piece carries the Everest Forge manufacturer warranty against defects in forging and heat treatment. Because a configured and engraved knife is made to your specification, it falls outside our standard returns window except where the blade is faulty — full terms are on our shipping and returns page. Several countries restrict importing large fixed-blade knives, so check your own rules before ordering, or contact us if you are unsure.

Questions About This Cleaver

Is this an officially licensed Rambo IV replica?

No. It is an unofficial, hand-forged tribute inspired by the cleaver from Rambo (2008). It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or licensed by the film's rights holders, Sylvester Stallone, Gil Hibben, Hibben Knives or any licensed knifemaker. Licensed reproductions exist, often signed and serialised, and are the right purchase if authentication matters to you. Ours is a hand-forged working chopper in the same design language, built to your specification.

Why is the Rambo IV a cleaver and not a Bowie?

Because the fourth film moved to the jungle, and Gil Hibben designed a blade for clearing rather than for cinema. The broad, forward-weighted cleaver chops far better than any Bowie in the series. It is the most divided-opinion knife among Rambo collectors: some find it the only genuinely useful one, others miss the classic silhouette. Both views are fair.

Will it really chop wood?

Yes. It will split kindling, limb branches, clear brush and take on camp jobs you would otherwise need a hatchet for. Green wood up to a few inches goes quickly. It is not a felling axe, so leave seasoned rounds and standing timber to the right tool, and never chop into stone, soil or metal with it.

Should I choose this or the Rambo III Bowie?

Choose the cleaver if chopping is the job: firewood, brush, camp work, and anything you would otherwise want a hatchet for. Choose our Rambo III builder if you want one blade that does most things reasonably well, including skinning and carving, and if you want the silhouette most people recognise. For longer reach than either, the Ranger Rambo machete is the lighter, longer option.

Is 1,100 grams too heavy?

For chopping, no: the weight is doing the work, and a lighter blade would bounce where this one bites. For carving, skinning or a long day on a belt, yes — this is the heaviest blade in our Rambo range. If you want something you can carry all day, our Rambo V builder is 651 grams.

Which handle should I choose?

Rosewood is our standard and the best choice for a blade that takes shock: dense, stable and comfortable when wet. Whitewood gives the strongest contrast against a dark blade. Horn and bone are the showpieces, glossy black and near-ivory respectively. The two-material grips give a two-tone look on the same full tang. All seven are pinned through the tang, so none is weaker than another.

Are the silver fittings real silver?

No. The silver-tone option is a bright white metal chosen for a silver look. It stays bright longer than brass or copper and needs no special care. The black fittings are the quietest match for a black coated blade.

What can I have engraved, and where?

Text typed into the personalisation field — a name, initials, a unit, dates, a short line — or a logo, crest, insignia or photograph uploaded as a file. Then choose the blade or the scabbard. The cleaver's broad flat is the largest engraving surface in our Rambo range, which makes it the best of them for a detailed crest or a longer inscription.

Why is the edge angle different from a normal knife?

Because a chopper needs a durable edge more than a keen one. A fine, low-angle edge slices beautifully and rolls or chips the first time it meets hardwood. Ours is ground a little steeper so it holds up to impact. Keep it at that angle when you sharpen rather than thinning it down.

Can I get a blunt version?

Yes. For cosplay, stage use or countries that restrict sharpened blades, add "Stage combat build — rebated edge, rounded tip." in the order note and we will build it that way; our stage combat standard explains what changes. Do not blunt a sharpened blade yourself.

Will 5160 steel rust?

Yes, if you let it. 5160 is a high-carbon spring steel, not stainless, and on a chopping blade that trade is worth making: it absorbs impact instead of chipping, which harder stainless steels do not. Wipe it dry after every session, keep a light film of oil on it and do not leave it in the scabbard for months. Black coated and acid wash reduce the upkeep.

Can I order a different blade length?

Not in this configurator, which keeps the blade at 13 inches. A shorter cleaver is handier and a longer one chops harder still; either can be quoted through our custom forge service.
