Boa-African Sword — A Hand-Forged Central African Leaf Blade of the Boa People

This sword is the Boa-African Sword — a hand-forged Central African leaf-shaped sword of the Boa people, distinguished by the open-slot fenestration in its upper blade near the hilt and its whitewood handle with brass pommel cap. The Boa people of what is today the northern Democratic Republic of Congo produced a distinctive family of leaf-shaped swords as part of the broader Central African blade tradition. The Boa-African is the Everest Forge interpretation of the Boa-people pattern specifically — visually distinct from the related Boa Zande Warrior Sword, which represents the Azande warrior tradition of the same region. Built by Everest Forge for collectors of Central African material culture.

Each blade is hand forged in Kathmandu, Nepal from 5160 high carbon spring steel — specifically reclaimed truck leaf spring — oil-tempered to working hardness, with a full tang. The standard configuration is a 22-inch leaf-shaped blade with a 6.5-inch whitewood grip topped with a brass pommel cap, and a hand-stitched tan leather scabbard with red leather throat panel, black leather baldric, and brass rivet fittings. Blade length is customisable from 18 to 36 inches before forging.

An honest note. This is a hand-forged collector and reenactment piece — an original Everest Forge interpretation inspired by the historical leaf-shaped sword of the Boa people of Central Africa. We describe how the Boa-African was carried historically — as part of a warrior and ceremonial tradition across the Congo basin — because that history is what the design expresses. We do not sell our blades as weapons. Because every Boa-African is forged individually, small variations in wood grain, weight, finish and leatherwork are natural marks of handwork, not flaws.

The Boa-African Sword — A Brief History

The Boa people are an ethnic group of northern Democratic Republic of Congo, part of the broader Bantu-speaking populations of the Congo basin. Their sword tradition — alongside that of the closely related Azande to the north — produced some of the most distinctive leaf-shaped blade forms in Central African material culture. The leaf-shaped silhouette, with its broad cutting belly tapering to a long thrusting point, was the iconic form across centuries of regional production, forged from locally smelted iron in the deep tradition of Iron Age African metallurgy that flourished long before European contact.

The Boa-African pattern is distinguished within this broader regional tradition by the open-slot fenestration in the upper blade near the hilt — a structural and decorative feature that lightens the blade and gives the Boa-African its instantly recognisable visual identity. Like the related Boa Zande, the Boa-African sword carried weight beyond its function as a weapon: it served as a marker of standing and a prestige object exchanged between communities. The colourful leather scabbard work — including the geometric and colour-block design with the red throat panel — is part of the regional design vocabulary that shaped the broader Boa material culture.

Why This Boa-African Sword Stands Apart

True Boa leaf-shaped pattern

The iconic broad-belly, long-taper leaf silhouette of the historical Boa sword — symmetric, double-edged, and instantly recognisable in any African arms collection.

Distinctive fenestrated blade

The open slot in the upper blade near the hilt — a structural and decorative feature unique to the Boa-African pattern that sets it visually apart from the related Boa Zande and from other Central African leaf swords.

Whitewood handle with brass pommel cap

A whitewood grip topped with a brass pommel cap — lighter in tone than the rosewood-and-brass-collar build of the Boa Zande, giving the Boa-African its own visual identity within the cluster.

5160 spring steel, oil-tempered

The same high carbon spring steel used in vehicle leaf springs, chosen for toughness and shock resistance. Oil-tempered to a working hardness — not a stainless display blade.

Customisable 18 to 36 inches

Standard 22-inch blade, or specify any length from 18 to 36 inches before forging — the widest customisation range across the Everest Forge African sword collection.

Hand-forged in Nepal

Forged on hammer and anvil by our blacksmiths in Kathmandu. See the process on The Making and meet the team on Meet the Maker.

How It Is Made

01

Steel selection

We start with reclaimed truck leaf spring in 5160 high carbon steel, chosen for toughness, shock resistance and edge retention. The modern equivalent of the locally smelted iron used by historical Iron Age African smiths.

02

Forging the leaf shape and the fenestration

The bar is heated and hammered by hand into the Boa-African's iconic leaf silhouette — a broad cutting belly tapering symmetrically to a long thrusting point. The open-slot fenestration is cut and finished in the upper blade near the hilt, then dressed to its final clean edges.

03

Heat treatment

The blade is hardened and oil-tempered to a working hardness, balancing a durable edge against a resilient spine.

04

Handle, brass pommel and scabbard

The whitewood grip is shaped and fitted to the full tang, with the brass pommel cap set at the top. The leather scabbard is hand-stitched with the contrasting red throat panel and the black leather baldric with brass rivets, reproduced from the historical references.

What Is Included

  • One hand-forged Boa-African Sword in 5160 spring steel
  • Whitewood (or rosewood / horn) handle with brass pommel cap (fitted)
  • Hand-stitched tan leather scabbard with red leather throat panel

  • Personalised engraving where requested

Custom and personalised pieces are forged to your specification and are non-returnable. Full details are on our Shipping and Returns and Warranty and Returns Policy pages.

Caring for Your Boa-African Sword

Wipe the blade clean after handling and apply a light film of mineral or blade oil to protect the high carbon steel from moisture. Pay particular attention to the inside edges of the open-slot fenestration, since this area can collect dust and humidity if not wiped down. The brass pommel cap will develop a patina over time — wipe it clean with a soft cloth, and polish lightly with a brass polish only if you prefer the bright finish. Treat the leather scabbard, throat panel and baldric occasionally with a leather conditioner to preserve their colour and the brass rivet finish. Store the blade out of the scabbard in dry conditions for long-term keeping.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Boa-African Sword?

The Boa-African Sword is a hand-forged Central African leaf-shaped sword of the Boa people of what is today the northern Democratic Republic of Congo. It is identified by its broad, symmetric, double-edged leaf-shaped blade — and distinguished within the Central African leaf-blade tradition by the open-slot fenestration in the upper blade near the hilt and its whitewood handle with brass pommel cap. The Boa-African was carried historically as both a functional warrior weapon and a marker of standing across the region.

What is the difference between this and the Boa Zande Sword?

The Boa-African Sword and the Boa Zande Warrior Sword are companion pieces in Everest Forge's Central African leaf-blade range, but they are visually distinct and rooted in different cultural anchors within the same region. The Boa-African focuses on the broader Boa-people leaf-blade heritage — distinguished by its open-slot fenestrated blade, whitewood handle with brass pommel cap, and tan leather scabbard with red throat panel and black baldric. The Boa Zande highlights the Azande (Zande) warrior tradition specifically — distinguished by its solid leaf blade, rosewood handle with brass collars top and bottom, and brown tooled leather scabbard with geometric pattern. Both share the iconic Central African leaf-shaped profile and are forged to the same Everest Forge standard. Many collectors want both pieces as a Central African leaf-blade pairing.

Who were the Boa people?

The Boa are an ethnic group of northern Democratic Republic of Congo, part of the broader Bantu-speaking populations of the Congo basin. The Boa material culture — including their leaf-shaped sword tradition — sits alongside that of the closely related Azande to the north, with both peoples contributing to the same broader Central African metalworking heritage. The Boa-African sword takes its name from the Boa people specifically.

What is the open slot in the blade?

The open slot in the upper blade near the hilt is a fenestration — a structural and decorative cutout that is the visual signature of the Boa-African pattern. The fenestration lightens the blade in the area closest to the hand and creates the visual identity that distinguishes the Boa-African from the solid-bladed Boa Zande and from other Central African leaf swords. The slot is cut and finished as part of the forging process, then dressed to its final clean edges.

How big is this Boa-African Sword?

The standard configuration is 28.5 inches overall — a 22-inch leaf-shaped blade and a 6.5-inch whitewood handle — and weighs approximately 0.95 kg without the scabbard. Blade length is a choice; you can specify any length from 18 to 36 inches before forging, the widest customisation range across our African sword collection.

What steel is the blade made from?

The blade is forged from 5160 high carbon spring steel — specifically reclaimed truck leaf spring, the same alloy Everest Forge uses on its battle-ready historical swords. 5160 is engineered to flex and recover under heavy shock load. After forging, the blade is oil-tempered to a working hardness. The choice of 5160 carbon steel is a modern echo of the locally smelted iron used by the historical Iron Age African smiths who originated this blade tradition.

Why is the blade leaf-shaped?

The leaf shape — a broad cutting belly tapering to a long thrusting point — was the dominant blade form across Central African sword traditions, including the Boa and Azande peoples. It is a functional geometry: the broad belly gives weight and presence in the cut, the long taper gives reach and a thrusting point, and the symmetric double-edge construction means both sides of the blade can be brought to bear. Iron Age African smiths developed this profile independently across the continent, and the Boa-African version expresses it in one of the most visually distinctive forms, with the addition of the open-slot fenestration as a defining regional flourish.

Can I choose a different length or handle material?

Yes. The standard 22-inch blade can be made at any length from 18 to 36 inches — the widest customisation range across our African swords. The handle is offered in whitewood / Sadhan (standard, for the canonical Boa-African look), rosewood or horn. The brass pommel cap is fitted regardless of handle material. Choose your options on this page when ordering.

Can I personalise or engrave the Boa-African?

Yes. Add a name, initials or a short message, or upload your own logo, crest or photo for custom engraving on the blade. Personalised engraving is included with your order. See our Personalized Blades page.

Where is the Boa-African forged?

The Boa-African Sword is hand-forged in Everest Forge's own workshop in Tokha-3, Kathmandu, Nepal, by Kami-caste blacksmiths — the same forge behind Everest Forge's military-issue kukris for the British Gurkha Army (BSI Service No. 1), the Nepal Army and the Nepal Police.

Do you ship the Boa-African internationally?

Yes. The Boa-African Sword ships worldwide via tracked DHL or FedEx on a Delivered Duty Paid (DDP) basis. Customs duties, import taxes and clearance fees are prepaid at checkout, so there is nothing extra to pay when the blade arrives at your door. Signature is required on delivery. Confirm local import rules before ordering.

Can I order a custom or fully bespoke Boa-African?

Yes. Specify your blade length, finish, handle and scabbard colour with the options on this page, or commission a fully bespoke Boa-African from your own reference through our Custom Forge service. We confirm every detail before forging begins.
