Long Viking Seax Sword — 18-Inch Hand-Forged Broad Norse Blade with Jute-Wrapped Handle

This is a hand-forged long Viking seax sword — an 18-inch broad, single-edged Norse blade forged in Nepal from reclaimed 5160 leaf-spring steel, full-tang and water-tempered. Built as a collectible long seax sword that still cuts, it pairs a broad semi-polished blade with a rosewood handle wrapped in natural jute rope, and can be ordered in blade lengths up to 26 inches.

The seax was the everyday blade of the Norse and Saxon world — tool, hunting knife and battlefield sidearm in one. The long seax, carried by warriors from the 7th century on, was the sword-length version of that blade. This piece revives it as a broad, honest working sword: enough mass behind the edge for real cutting, enough history in the lines to anchor a Viking arms collection.

What sets this one apart is the grip. The 6-inch full-tang rosewood handle is wrapped in natural jute rope — a textured, secure hold that bites even in a wet or gloved hand, and a look you will not find on a typical polished-handle seax. Broad in the blade, semi-polished in finish, it reads as a used blade rather than a showpiece.

Honest note: this is an original Everest Forge interpretation of the Viking long seax, historically inspired rather than a museum-exact replica of one specific find. It is live steel — sharp, full-tang and functional — made for cutting, reenactment, collection and display, but not for contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring. Want a specific historical seax recreated exactly? That is a custom build.

The Long Seax — Sword-Length Blade of the Norse

Where a short seax rode the belt as a utility knife, the long seax stretched to sword length and took its place as a primary sidearm. This Long Viking Seax Sword keeps that proportion: an 18-inch broad single-edged blade on a full tang, balanced so the weight works for you through a cut rather than against you. The 5160 spring steel takes a hard, water-tempered edge, and the broad profile gives it the presence of a true Norse war-knife. Order it longer — out to 26 inches — for even more reach and a more commanding piece on the wall or in the hand.

Caring for Your High-Carbon Seax

5160 is a high-carbon steel and will surface-rust if neglected. Keep the blade dry, wipe it down after handling, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage. For long-term storage, keep the seax out of its scabbard so the edge stays dry. Keep the jute-wrapped grip dry as well, and re-oil the blade now and then to protect the finish and edge.

Long Viking Seax Sword — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a long Viking seax sword?

A long seax is the sword-length version of the seax, the single-edged blade carried across the Norse and Saxon world. Where a short seax served as a utility knife, the long seax — from the 7th century onward — was a primary sidearm. This one is an 18-inch broad long seax, single-edged and full-tang.

How historically accurate is it?

It is an original Everest Forge interpretation of the Viking long seax — historically inspired and true to the broad single-edged form, rather than a museum-exact copy of one specific archaeological find. If you want a particular historical seax recreated precisely, order it as a custom build.

Is it a sword or a knife?

At 18 inches it is sword-length and handles as a single-edged short sword, while keeping the everyday usefulness the seax was known for. The word seax comes from the Old English for knife, so the long seax sits between large knife and short sword by design.

Why is the handle wrapped in jute rope?

The 6-inch full-tang rosewood handle is wrapped in natural jute rope for a textured, secure grip that holds even in a wet or gloved hand. It also gives the blade a rugged, used look rather than the plain polished handle most seaxes carry.

What steel is it made from, and is it full tang?

It is hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon leaf-spring steel, water-tempered for toughness and edge retention, and built full-tang for strength and balance. That makes it a functional working sword, not a display-only piece.

Does it come sharpened and ready to use?

Yes. Each blade is hand-sharpened and ready to use on arrival. It is live steel — sharp and functional — so it is not suited to contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring.

How long a blade can I order?

The standard blade is 18 inches. You can order it from 16 inches up to 26 inches — the longest option in our seax line — for extra reach and presence.

How heavy is it?

It weighs around 1.02 kg. The broad blade carries real mass behind the edge, which is what gives this long seax its cutting authority, while the full tang keeps it balanced in the hand.

Can I choose the handle and scabbard?

Yes. The handle comes in rosewood or white-wood, wrapped in jute rope as standard, and the leather-wrapped wooden scabbard is available in black, brown, yellow, red, green and blue.

Can I personalise or engrave it?

Yes. You can add a name, initials, runes or a short message, or upload a logo or photo for custom engraving. Personalisation is included at no extra charge on standard builds.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. We ship worldwide by tracked, insured DHL or FedEx with secure checkout. Please check edged-weapon import rules for your country before ordering, as they vary.

How do I care for the blade?

Keep this high-carbon blade dry, wipe it after handling, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage. Keep the jute-wrapped grip dry too, and for long-term storage keep the seax out of its scabbard so the edge stays dry.
