Anglo-Saxon Long Seax — 18-Inch Hand-Forged Viking-Era Blade with Fuller & Red Scabbard

This is a hand-forged Anglo-Saxon long seax — an 18-inch single-edged blade forged in Nepal from 5160 leaf-spring steel, full-tang and water-tempered, with a fuller down the blade and a bold, decorated red yak-leather scabbard. The seax was the signature blade of the Anglo-Saxons — the people who took their very name from it — and this Anglo-Saxon seax revives that heritage as a functional, eye-catching piece.

Hand-forged to order in Kathmandu · Backed by 1 verified customer review

No blade is more Anglo-Saxon than the seax. The Saxons, Angles and Jutes carried it as tool and sidearm alike, and the word Saxon itself comes from seax — the single-edged knife-sword that defined the people. The most famous survivor, an Anglo-Saxon seax carved with the full runic futhorc, still sits in the British Museum. This long seax stands in that tradition: a broad, single-edged blade built for real use.

The 18-inch blade carries a fuller down its length to lighten and balance it, polished and sharpened ready to use, on a full tang through a 6-inch rosewood handle. It comes housed in a vivid red yak-leather scabbard finished with a stamped Norse motif and laced detailing — the boldest scabbard in our seax range, and the detail that makes this one stand out on a wall or at an event.

Honest note: this is an original Everest Forge interpretation of the Anglo-Saxon long seax, historically inspired rather than a museum-exact replica of one specific find, and the scabbard motif is decorative. It is live steel — sharp, full-tang and functional — made for cutting, reenactment, collection and display, but not for contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring. Want a specific historical seax recreated exactly? That is a custom build.

The Blade That Named the Saxons

The seax gave the Anglo-Saxons their name, and for good reason: it was the one blade nearly everyone carried, from farmers to warriors, across early medieval England and the wider Germanic world. The long seax — sword-length and single-edged — was its most serious form, a sidearm that doubled as a heavy working knife. This Anglo-Saxon Long Seax keeps that character: a broad fullered blade with the reach of a short sword and the toughness of 5160 spring steel, finished with a scabbard bold enough to do the history justice.

Caring for Your High-Carbon Seax

5160 is a high-carbon steel and will surface-rust if neglected. Keep the blade dry, wipe it down after handling, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage. Keep the leather scabbard dry too, and for long-term storage keep the seax out of its scabbard so the edge stays dry.

Anglo-Saxon Long Seax — Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Anglo-Saxon seax?

An Anglo-Saxon seax is the single-edged blade carried by the Saxons, Angles and Jutes of early medieval England and the wider Germanic world — tool and sidearm in one. The long seax is its sword-length form. This one is an 18-inch hand-forged Anglo-Saxon long seax.

Why were the Saxons named after the seax?

The word Saxon comes from seax — the blade was so central to the people that it gave them their name. It was carried for everyday work and for defence across Anglo-Saxon England, which is why the seax is the blade most associated with them.

Is it a sword or a knife?

At 18 inches it is sword-length and handles as a single-edged short sword, while keeping the everyday usefulness the seax was known for. The long seax sits between large knife and short sword by design.

What is the fuller for?

The fuller is the groove down the blade. It lightens and balances the blade without weakening it, helping this broad long seax handle well for its size.

Tell me about the red scabbard.

The standard scabbard is a vivid red yak leather over a cottonwood core, finished with a decorative stamped motif and laced detailing — the boldest scabbard in our seax range. You can also order it in black, brown, yellow, green or blue.

How historically accurate is it?

It is an original Everest Forge interpretation of the Anglo-Saxon long seax — historically inspired and true to the single-edged form, rather than a museum-exact copy of one specific find such as the famous runic seax in the British Museum. For an exact recreation, order a custom build.

What steel is it made from, and is it full tang?

It is hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon leaf-spring steel, water-tempered for toughness and edge retention, and built full-tang for strength and balance. That makes it a functional working blade, not a display-only piece.

Does it come sharpened and ready to use?

Yes. Each blade is hand-sharpened and ready to use on arrival. It is live steel — sharp and functional — so it is not suited to contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring.

What blade lengths can I order?

The standard blade is 18 inches. You can order it from 16 inches up to 24 inches, depending on the reach and presence you want.

Can I choose the handle and scabbard?

Yes. Handles come in rosewood, white-wood, horn and combinations such as rosewood and bone or rosewood and horn, and the yak-leather scabbard is available in red, black, brown, yellow, green and blue.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. We ship worldwide by tracked, insured DHL or FedEx with secure checkout. Please check edged-weapon import rules for your country before ordering, as they vary.

How do I care for the blade?

Keep this high-carbon blade dry, wipe it after handling, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage. Keep the leather scabbard dry too, and for long-term storage keep the seax out of its scabbard so the edge stays dry.
