The Egyptian Khopesh — Hand-Forged Sickle-Sword in 5160 Spring Steel

Battle-Ready 5160 Spring Steel Full Tang Rosewood & Leather Handle Hand-Sharpened 4 Finishes · 6 Colors Free Engraving Customizable Length

The Everest Forge Egyptian Khopesh — the iconic ancient Egyptian sickle-sword, hand-forged in Nepal by master blacksmiths from 5160 leaf-spring steel, full-tang, water-tempered, hand-sharpened, and finished with a premium rosewood-and-leather-wrapped handle. This is the historical-collector flagship of our Khopesh range — the most reviewed, the most refined, and the only one with the leather-wrapped grip. Then customized to you: blade finish, scabbard color, length, engraving.

Why Buyers Call It a Sickle Sword

The Khopesh is one of the few historical weapons that most buyers know by shape before they know by name. Search for "sickle sword," "Egyptian hook sword," "Egyptian scythe," or "curved Egyptian blade" — they all describe the same weapon: the Khopesh.

The Sickle Shape Is the Story

The forward-curving blade with the hooked inside edge is what gives the Khopesh its instantly-recognisable silhouette. That shape is not decoration — it is the entire functional logic of the weapon. Energy concentrates toward the tip. The hook catches shields. The forward weight makes every cut devastating.

Bronze Age Origin, Modern Steel

First seen around 2500 BCE, the Khopesh was used in continuous Egyptian military service for over a thousand years. This reproduction follows the New Kingdom battle pattern in shape and proportion, forged from modern 5160 spring steel instead of bronze — tougher, sharper, and infinitely more practical for today's collector and reenactor.

The Khopesh — A Bronze Age History

The Khopesh is one of the oldest documented swords on earth. It evolved from the Canaanite sickle-axe around 2500 BCE, entered Egyptian military use in the Middle Bronze Age, and reached its peak as the signature sidearm of Egyptian elite infantry and pharaohs under the New Kingdom (c. 1550–1070 BCE). Ramses II is depicted wielding one at the Battle of Kadesh. Thutmose III campaigned with one across Canaan and Syria. Two Khopesh swords were buried with Tutankhamun — one full-size functional bronze blade, one smaller ceremonial piece. Both sit today in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

The forward-curving sickle profile was not decorative — it was tactical. The inside curve concentrated impact energy toward the tip. The hook caught enemy shields and weapons. The forward weight made the slashing cut devastating against unarmoured opponents. For over a thousand years it was the elite Egyptian close-combat blade, and gods were depicted handing a Khopesh to the pharaoh as a symbol of divine authority.

The Khopesh shape later influenced the development of curved swords across the Mediterranean and Near East — the Iberian falcata, the Greek kopis, and eventually the wider family of scimitar-style blades all trace conceptual lineage back to the Bronze Age Egyptian sickle-sword.

For Collectors, Reenactors, and Cosplay Builders

A real hand-forged steel Khopesh occupies a unique space — it serves serious historical collectors and modern cosplay builders with the same blade. Here is who buys this Khopesh and what they do with it.

Historical Collectors & Reenactors

Bronze Age weapons enthusiasts, Egyptology students, museum-style display collectors, and historical-martial-arts practitioners. The 20-inch blade follows New Kingdom battle proportions. The leather-wrapped rosewood handle is the premium-tier presentation choice. Pair with our Bronze Age Swords, Kopis collection, and Scimitar Swords for a chronological display of forward-curving blade traditions.

Cosplay & Convention Builders

The Khopesh has had a major modern cultural resurgence. Assassin's Creed Origins features it as Bayek of Siwa's signature weapon. Marvel's Moon Knight (Marc Spector / Khonshu avatar) carries crescent-edged khopesh blades. Stargate SG-1 Jaffa warriors wield ceremonial khopesh swords. The Mummy films and pharaonic costume builds rely on it. A real hand-forged steel khopesh with custom engraving is the premium-tier choice over molded plastic props. Check venue weapon policies before transport.

Egyptian Khopesh Sword — Buyer FAQ

Is this Khopesh a real sword or a display replica?

Real, fully functional. The blade is 5160 high-carbon spring steel, hand-forged from a single billet, full-tang, water-tempered, and hand-sharpened. It meets our published Battle Ready Standard. You can absolutely display it — most buyers do — but it is structurally and functionally a working sword, not a decorative piece.

Why is the Khopesh sometimes called a "sickle sword"?

Because the blade profile resembles a farming sickle — forward-curving with a hooked inside edge. The Khopesh evolved from earlier sickle-shaped agricultural and battle implements, and the name "sickle sword" became a common descriptive term in English. You'll also see it called an Egyptian hook sword, Egyptian scythe, or curved Egyptian blade — all describe the same weapon.

What is 5160 spring steel and why does it matter?

5160 is a chromium-bearing high-carbon alloy originally developed for heavy-duty truck leaf springs. It is tougher and more shock-absorbing than 1070 or 1095 carbon, and dramatically more impact-forgiving than 420 stainless. The same characteristics that let a leaf spring survive years of pothole abuse make it an excellent sword blade. We source our steel from reclaimed truck suspension stock.

Does the Khopesh come sharpened?

Yes, sharpened at the forge before shipping. Hand-sharpened to a working edge — sharp enough to chop and cut, durable enough to hold the edge through real use. No optional sharpening fee or "blunt by default" version like some competitors.

What does the customization include? Is engraving really free?

Yes. Free text engraving is included with every Egyptian Khopesh — names, initials, dates, dedications, or short phrases. You can also upload a logo, crest, or photo for custom engraving. Choose blade finish from 4 options (Polished is default; Satin and Blacked are -$5; Raw forge is -$10) and scabbard color from 6 colors at no extra cost. You approve a digital engraving preview before any work touches the blade.

Can I order a different blade length?

Yes. The default specification is a 20-inch blade, but custom blade length is available through our Request Custom Forge service. Most buyers stay with 20 inches for the authentic New Kingdom proportion, but we have produced khopesh blades from 14 inches up to 26 inches for specific buyers.

Is the Khopesh suitable for cosplay — Bayek of Siwa, Moon Knight, pharaoh costumes?

Yes, and it is one of the strongest cosplay-tier choices specifically because the blade is real, the engraving options let you customize for your character, and the leather-wrapped handle reads as premium on camera. Assassin's Creed Origins (Bayek), Marvel's Moon Knight (Marc Spector / Khonshu), Stargate Jaffa builds, and pharaonic Egyptian costumes all use blades like this. Note: weapon transport policies vary at conventions — check your venue rules before traveling with a steel blade.

How is this different from the cheaper khopesh swords on Amazon or eBay?

Three real differences. First, steel grade — most Amazon and eBay khopesh swords use unspecified "carbon steel" or 1095; we use 5160 spring steel, which is tougher and more shock-resistant. Second, construction — most are factory-ground from stock blanks in Pakistan; ours is hand-forged on an anvil in Nepal by a master smith. Third, customization — most are one fixed configuration; ours is built to your specification with free engraving and finish choices.

Is the Egyptian Khopesh the same as the Greek Kopis?

No. The Khopesh is Egyptian and dates from around 2500 BCE with a hooked sickle-shaped blade. The Kopis is Greek and dates from around 600 BCE with a forward-curving recurve profile. Different cultures, different eras, different blade geometry — separated by nearly 2,000 years. If you want the Greek version, see our Kopis Sword collection.

Was the Khopesh really used by Tutankhamun and Ramses II?

Yes. When Howard Carter excavated Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922, two Khopesh swords were recovered — one functional bronze battle blade and one smaller ceremonial piece. Ramses II is depicted wielding a Khopesh on temple reliefs of the Battle of Kadesh. The Khopesh was the signature pharaonic sidearm for over a thousand years.

Is this a good gift sword?

One of our most-ordered gift swords specifically because the customization makes it personal. Free text engraving plus custom logo/photo engraving turn it from a purchase into a meaningful gift — for sword collectors, history enthusiasts, milestone birthdays, retirements, military presentations, or graduations. The leather-wrapped handle and polished blade make it presentation-ready out of the scabbard.

How long does it take to make and ship?

Each Khopesh is hand-forged to order with your customization choices. Standard production is typically 2 to 4 weeks from order. We ship worldwide via DHL Express or FedEx with full tracking. International transit is typically 5 to 10 business days after dispatch.
