Celtic Seax Cleaver-Machete — 16-Inch Hand-Forged Engraved Chopper with Celtic Knotwork & a Valknut
This is a hand-forged Celtic seax cleaver — a 16-inch wide chopping machete forged in Nepal from reclaimed 5160 leaf-spring steel, full-tang and water-tempered, with Celtic knotwork and Norse symbols engraved down the blade. It is the decorated workhorse of our cleaver line: a serious chopper carrying a Valknut, a Norse roundel and a band of Celtic knots, finished bright so the engraving reads.
Drawing on the big seaxes carried by Norse and Celtic warriors, this is a cleaver-machete reimagined as a heritage piece. The wide forward belly gives it real chopping and slashing power for outdoor work, while the engraved Celtic knotwork, the three-triangle Valknut, the circular Norse symbol and the chevrons along the blade turn a working tool into something with presence on the wall.
Under the decoration it is genuine 5160 with a water-tempered edge on a 6-inch full-tang rosewood handle — sharpened, balanced and ready to work. It is the cleaver to choose when you want the chopping power of a machete and the look of a Norse-Celtic heirloom in one blade.
Backed by a verified customer review.
Honest note: this is an original Everest Forge design, a fusion of fantasy, function and history. The Celtic knotwork and Norse symbols are decorative motifs inspired by that heritage rather than a copy of one specific historical artifact. It is live steel — sharp, full-tang and functional — built for real chopping, clearing, collection and display, but not for contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring.

What sets this cleaver apart is the artwork on a genuinely hard-working blade. A band of Celtic knotwork runs down the blade, anchored by a Valknut and a circular Norse symbol near the bolster and chevrons toward the tip — the kind of detailing that usually lives on display-only pieces, here put on a 16-inch chopper that can actually clear brush and split wood. It is offered in satin or polished/mirror finish so the engraving stands out; a brighter blade shows the knotwork best.

Caring for Your High-Carbon Cleaver
5160 is a high-carbon steel and will surface-rust if neglected. Keep the blade dry, wipe it down after use, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage — taking care to keep the engraved areas clean and lightly oiled. For long-term storage, keep it out of the scabbard so the edge stays dry.

What is a Celtic seax cleaver?
It is a wide single-edged cleaver-machete built on the big-seax profile carried by Norse and Celtic warriors, with Celtic knotwork and Norse symbols engraved on the blade. This one is a 16-inch chopper, decorated but fully functional.
What are the engravings on the blade?
A band of Celtic knotwork runs down the blade, with a Valknut (three interlocking triangles), a circular Norse symbol near the bolster and chevrons toward the tip. They are decorative motifs drawn from Norse and Celtic heritage.
Are the symbols historically accurate?
They are inspired by Celtic and Norse heritage rather than copied from one specific historical artifact. This is an original Everest Forge design — a fusion of fantasy, function and history — not a museum-exact reproduction.
Is it a sword, a cleaver or a machete?
It is a cleaver-machete: a wide single-edged chopping blade. If you want the sword-length Celtic seax instead, see our Celtic seax sword. This one is built for chopping and clearing.
What steel is it made from, and is it full tang?
It is hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon leaf-spring steel, water-tempered for toughness and edge retention, and built full-tang for strength under hard chopping. It is a genuine working blade, not display-only.
Does it come sharpened and ready to use?
Yes. Each blade is hand-sharpened and ready to use on arrival. It is live steel — sharp and functional — so it is not suited to contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring.
Why are there only satin and polished finishes?
Because the engraving needs a bright surface to read against. Satin and polished/mirror both show the Celtic knotwork and Norse symbols clearly, while raw-forge or blacked finishes would hide them, so those are not offered on this blade.
What blade lengths can I order?
The standard blade is 16 inches. You can order it from 14 inches up to 26 inches, depending on the reach and chopping mass you want.
How heavy is it?
Around 820 grams. That gives it enough mass behind the wide edge for real chopping while staying manageable for outdoor work.
Can I choose the handle and scabbard?
Yes. The handle comes in rosewood, white-wood, horn and combinations, and the leather-wrapped wooden scabbard is available in black, brown, yellow, red, green and blue.
Can I add my own engraving?
Yes. You can add a name, initials, runes or a short message alongside the Celtic work, or upload a logo or photo for custom engraving. Personalisation is included at no extra charge on standard builds.
How do I care for the engraved blade?
Keep this high-carbon blade dry, wipe it after use, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage, keeping the engraved areas clean and lightly oiled. For long-term storage keep it out of the scabbard so the edge stays dry.
