Seax Swords & Seax Knives — Hand-Forged Saxon & Viking Blades

Everest Forge hand-forges seax swords and seax knives — the single-edged blade the Saxons, Angles and Vikings carried as both tool and weapon. Every seax in this collection is forged in Nepal from 5160 high-carbon leaf-spring steel, water-tempered, full-tang and hand-sharpened. From compact seax daggers to long seax and langseax swords, and working seax machetes, this is one of the widest hand-forged seax ranges available for sale anywhere.

The seax (also spelled sax, saxe or scramasax) was the defining sidearm of the early-medieval north. Worn edge-up in a horizontal belt scabbard, it served Germanic and Anglo-Saxon warriors from the Migration Period through the Viking Age — so central to the Saxon people that it gave them their name. The word itself comes from the Old English for knife, which is why a seax sits on the line between large fighting knife and short sword.

Our seaxes are original Everest Forge designs inspired by surviving historical types — not licensed museum replicas. Each is built as live steel for collection, display, reenactment, bushcraft and real cutting work. They are full-tang functional blades, not stage props — and not intended for contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring.

Historically, most seaxes used a hidden centerline tang and horn grip. Ours are built modern and tougher: full-tang construction with rosewood handles for everyday strength. Where you want a period-correct hidden-tang or horn-handled build, that is a custom forge order.

What Is a Seax?

A seax is a single-edged blade used across northern Europe from roughly the 5th to 11th centuries. It ranges from a short utility knife to a sword-length weapon, and is recognised by its thick, single-edged blade, simple grip and edge-up horizontal scabbard. Used by Saxons, Angles, Frisians, Franks and Vikings as an everyday tool and a battlefield weapon.

Types of Seax We Forge

Long Seax & Langseax Swords

The 18 to 20 inch war-knife — the primary fighting seax from the 7th century onward. Long enough to be a true short sword, single-edged for heavy cuts. Our biggest seax category.

Broad & Short Seax

Shorter, wider sidearm and utility blades. The broad seax favours a deep belly for chopping; short seaxes carry as a fast Anglo-Saxon utility knife.

Seax Machetes & Cleavers

Where almost no other forge goes — the seax profile rebuilt as a working machete and cleaver for jungle, farm and field. Full-tang, heavy, and made to cut for real.

Seax Daggers

Compact single-edged Anglo-Saxon long daggers — the everyday seax form, sized for the belt.

Etched & D-Guard Seax

Runic, floral and Celtic-knot etched blades, plus D-guard variants that add a knuckle bow for grip and presence.

Custom & Period Builds

Hidden-tang, horn-handled, historically accurate or your own hybrid — built to your measurements on request.

Seax Swords — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a seax?

A seax is a single-edged blade used across northern Europe from roughly the 5th to 11th centuries, ranging from a short utility knife to a sword-length weapon. It is identified by a thick single-edged blade, a simple grip and an edge-up horizontal scabbard, and was carried by Saxons, Angles, Franks and Vikings as both an everyday tool and a battlefield weapon.

Is a seax a sword or a knife?

Both, depending on size. The word seax comes from the Old English for knife, and shorter seaxes are large fighting knives. Long seax and langseax blades reach 18 to 20 inches and function as single-edged short swords. Our range covers the full span from seax dagger to seax sword.

What is the difference between a seax and a langseax?

A langseax is simply a long seax — typically over 50 cm overall, with a blade long enough to serve as a short sword and sometimes a longer two-handed grip. A standard seax is shorter and worn as a utility knife or sidearm. We forge both.

What is a broad seax or broken-back seax?

A broad seax has a deep, wide blade built for heavy chopping cuts. A broken-back seax has a sharp angled transition along the spine down to the point, a profile most associated with later Anglo-Saxon Britain. Both are single-edged seax forms, and either can be forged to order.

Were seaxes really used as weapons?

Yes. Alongside the spear and shield, the seax was a primary sidearm of Germanic, Anglo-Saxon and Viking-age warriors, and the long seax could be carried in place of a sword. It doubled as an everyday cutting tool, which is why it remained in use for centuries.

What steel are your seax blades made from?

Every seax is hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon leaf-spring steel and water-tempered. It is the same tough, shock-resistant steel used in vehicle suspension, which makes for a hard-wearing edge that holds up to real cutting.

Are your seaxes full tang?

Yes. Our standard seaxes are full-tang for strength and balance, making them functional rather than display-only. Historically many seaxes used a hidden centerline tang — if you want that period-correct build, order it as a custom seax.

Do the blades come sharpened and ready to use?

Yes. Each seax is hand-sharpened and ready to use on arrival. These are live steel blades — sharp and functional — so they are not suited to contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring.

Does the seax come with a scabbard?

Yes. Each seax ships with a leather-covered wooden scabbard. Several models carry edge-up in the traditional horizontal seax style.

Can I order a custom seax?

Yes. Tell us the blade shape, length, handle material, etching and scabbard you want and our smiths will forge a bespoke seax — historically accurate or a modern hybrid. Custom engraving and personalisation are included at no extra charge on standard builds. Start with our custom forge request page.

Do you ship seax swords internationally?

Yes. We ship worldwide by tracked DHL and FedEx with secure checkout. Edged-weapon import rules vary by country, so please check your local regulations before ordering.

How do I care for a high-carbon seax blade?

High-carbon steel will surface-rust if neglected. Keep the blade dry, wipe it after handling, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage. For long-term storage keep the seax out of its scabbard so the edge stays dry.
