La Tène Swords - Hand-Forged Celtic Iron Age Blades

La Tène Swords - Hand-Forged Celtic Iron Age Blades

Hand-Forged La Tène Swords — Straight Celtic Iron Age Blades

The La Tène sword is the long, straight slashing blade of the Celtic Iron Age — the weapon carried across Gaul, Britain and Central Europe from roughly 450 BC until the Roman conquest. Every La Tène sword in this collection is hand-forged in Nepal as an original Everest Forge blade, inspired by the martial culture that gave the era its name.

The La Tène period takes its name from a site on Lake Neuchatel in Switzerland, where archaeologists recovered hundreds of Celtic weapons and ornaments. The swords of that world were not the leaf-shaped blades of the earlier Bronze Age — they were comparatively long, parallel-edged and straight, built to slash from horseback, from chariots and in open formation. Hilts were often organic or anthropoid in form, and the iron scabbards carried the flowing, curvilinear ornament now called La Tène art.

We forge that spirit, not a museum cast. Each blade is shaped from reclaimed 5160 spring steel, runs full-tang for real structural strength, and is water-quenched and tempered for a working edge. Grips are turned from natural hardwood or bound in leather, and scabbards are finished in wood and leather rather than reproduction iron. The result is a functional Celtic sword with weight and balance in the hand — a piece for collectors, reenactors and serious display, made by smiths who forge for a living.

An honest note: these are historically inspired original designs, not exact museum reproductions. They are live, sharpened, full-tang steel meant for cutting practice, collecting and display — not for edge-on-edge contact sparring or LARP.

What Defines a La Tène Sword

If you have searched for a Celtic sword and landed on curved or leaf-shaped blades, here is the distinction that matters. The classic La Tène sword is long and straight, double-edged, with a rounded or spatulate point optimised for the cut rather than the thrust. Earlier Celtic and Bronze Age swords were shorter and leaf-bladed; the La Tène form stretched out and straightened as cavalry and loose-order fighting came to dominate the battlefield. When people search for a Gaulish sword, a Gallic sword or an Iron Age Celtic sword, this straight slashing blade is almost always what they mean.

Gaulish, Gallic, Celtic — One Iron Age World

The Gauls, the Gallic tribes and the wider Celtic peoples of Iron Age Europe shared the same broad weapon tradition. A Gaul sword and a La Tène sword are not two different things — Gaul was the heartland of the La Tène culture, and the long iron blade was its signature sidearm. Our collection sits squarely in that lineage: ancient European fighting swords, reborn as functional steel.

Caring for Your Celtic Sword

High-carbon 5160 steel will rust if neglected. Wipe the blade dry after handling, keep a thin film of oil on the steel, and store the sword out of the scabbard in humid climates. Treat the edge as live steel and the wood and leather will age gracefully for decades.

What is a La Tène sword?

A La Tène sword is the long, straight, double-edged slashing sword of the Celtic Iron Age, made roughly between 450 BC and the Roman conquest. It is named after La Tène, a site on Lake Neuchatel in Switzerland where many Celtic weapons were found. The blade was built for cutting in open and mounted combat rather than for thrusting.

Were La Tène swords curved or leaf-shaped?

No. The classic La Tène sword is long and straight with parallel edges. Leaf-shaped blades belong to the earlier Bronze Age and to earlier Celtic leaf swords. If you are looking specifically for a leaf-bladed Celtic sword, that is a different style; the swords in this collection are the straight Iron Age La Tène form.

Are these real Celtic swords or replicas?

They are historically inspired original designs — functional swords that capture the form and spirit of La Tène blades, rather than exact museum reproductions of any single excavated piece. Each is live, full-tang, hand-forged steel.

What is the difference between a La Tène sword and a Gaulish or Gallic sword?

There is no real difference. Gaul was the heartland of the La Tène culture, so a Gaulish sword, a Gallic sword and a La Tène sword all describe the same long Celtic Iron Age blade. The terms simply reflect different ways of naming the same warrior tradition.

What steel are your La Tène swords forged from?

The blades in this line are forged from reclaimed 5160 high-carbon spring steel and run full-tang. It is a tough, resilient steel well suited to a functional slashing sword. Steel and temper are listed on each individual product page.

Are these swords sharp and functional?

Yes. They are live, sharpened steel forged to cut. They are suited to cutting practice, collecting and display. They are not designed for edge-on-edge contact sparring or LARP, where blunt training blades are the right choice.

What lengths are available?

The collection runs from roughly 21 to 25 inches in blade length, with several hilt and finish options. Exact dimensions are listed on each product page, and a custom commission can be built to your preferred length.

Can I order a custom La Tène sword?

Yes. Through our custom forge you can specify the length, hilt material, scabbard finish and any engraving you want. The blade is then hand-forged to order, with personalisation included at no extra charge.

Do these swords come with a scabbard?

Yes. Each sword ships with a fitted scabbard finished in wood and leather. The flowing curvilinear ornament of historical La Tène scabbards can be reflected in custom engraving on request.

How do I choose between the swords in this collection?

Start with length and handle. The 25-inch Celtic Warrior and Wood Hilt swords give you the most reach and presence; the 24-inch Celtic Tène and Iron Age Tène swords are balanced all-rounders; and the 21-inch blade is the most compact and agile. Beyond that it comes down to hilt material and finish, both shown on each product page.

How are these swords shipped?

Orders ship worldwide from our forge in Kathmandu on a DDP basis, meaning duties and taxes are prepaid before the sword leaves Nepal. You receive your blade with nothing further to pay on delivery.

How do I care for a high-carbon Celtic sword?

Keep the blade dry and lightly oiled, since 5160 is a high-carbon steel that can rust. Wipe it down after handling, store it out of the scabbard in humid conditions, and the steel, wood and leather will last for generations.
