Underneath every combination is the same working blade: 18 inches of hand-forged 5160 spring steel with a forward-curving chopping profile, on a full tang whose steel forms the handle itself, wrapped tight in leather. It is our unofficial tribute to the machete carried by Denzel Washington's wanderer in The Book of Eli (2010) — built as a real working machete, not a stainless display piece.

The Blade in The Book of Eli
In Albert and Allen Hughes' The Book of Eli, Denzel Washington plays a lone traveller crossing a ruined America to carry a book west. He carries one blade for the whole journey: a long, forward-weighted machete with a leather-wrapped grip and a dark, weathered look. He rarely draws it, and when he does, the scene is over quickly. That restraint is why the blade stuck with viewers — it reads as a working tool first and a weapon second.
That is the idea we forge to. The blade carries its weight forward for chopping, the handle is the tang itself wrapped in leather, and the whole piece is plain, tough and repairable — the kind of blade a person could carry for years and keep working with nothing but a file and a strip of leather.
Which Blade Finish Suits an Eli Machete?
Why the Handle Is Leather Over Steel
On most machetes, the tang runs inside scales of wood or horn. On this one, the steel of the tang is shaped into the handle itself and bound in leather. There is no joint between blade and handle to loosen, no scales to crack, and no glue to fail — the machete is one piece of steel from point to butt. The leather gives a firm, grippy hold in sweaty or wet hands and takes some sting out of hard chopping. When it eventually wears, it can be stripped and re-wrapped, which is exactly the kind of repair a survival blade should allow.

Scabbard and Leather Colour
The scabbard is built on a carved wooden core wrapped in leather, with a belt loop for carry. The wooden core holds a broad machete blade clear of the leather, so the edge cannot work its way through over time. Black and brown are the most film-like and hide field dirt best; red, green and blue make a bolder statement; white is the most striking and shows wear soonest.

An Honest Note on This Machete
An honest note. Four things worth saying plainly. First, this is an unofficial tribute, not a licensed replica and not a millimetre copy of the film prop; it follows the film blade's character and proportions as a working machete. Second, at around 920 grams it is a heavy blade. That weight is what makes it chop, and it is also what you will feel after an hour of clearing — our 15-inch Eli machete is the lighter choice. Third, 5160 is not stainless. It will rust if left wet or stored in its scabbard; keep it lightly oiled. Fourth, a leather-wrapped steel handle is tougher than any wooden one, but the leather is the part that wears — expect to condition it, and one day re-wrap it.

How Your Order Is Made
Caring for Your Machete
Wipe the blade dry after use — sap and skin acid both mark carbon steel quickly — and keep a light film of oil on it; any mineral or machine oil works. Do not store the machete in its scabbard for long periods, because the leather and wooden core hold moisture against the steel. Condition the handle leather and the scabbard every few months so they stay supple, and check the wrap for looseness once a year. Touch the edge up with a file or coarse stone after heavy work; a chopper needs a tough edge more than a razor one.
Shipping, Returns and Warranty
Every piece is prepared at the forge in seven to ten days, and shipping adds a further seven to ten days. Orders to the USA and Canada travel with FedEx; everywhere else ships on a DDP service, which means duties and taxes are settled before the parcel moves so there is nothing to pay on delivery. Every piece carries the Everest Forge manufacturer warranty against defects in forging and heat treatment. Because a configured machete is made to your specification, it falls outside our standard returns window except where the blade is faulty — full terms are on our shipping and returns page. Is this an officially licensed Book of Eli machete?
No. It is an unofficial, hand-forged tribute inspired by the machete in The Book of Eli (2010). It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or licensed by Warner Bros., Alcon Entertainment or any rights holder of the film. What it offers instead is a real hand-forged 5160 working machete in a finish and leather colour you choose yourself.
Which finish is closest to the film?
Black coated. The film blade reads dark and weathered on screen, with a bright working edge, and the black coated finish gives that look while also being the most rust-resistant. Raw forge is the next closest, with a darker, more battle-worn surface. Pair either with black or brown leather for the most film-like build.
How is this different from your other Book of Eli machetes?
This is the configurable one: an 18-inch blade with a leather-wrapped steel handle, where you choose the finish and leather colour and see the result before ordering. The Large Book of Eli Machete has the same size of blade with a rosewood handle. The 15-inch Eli machete is lighter and easier to carry. The 20-inch Eli sword-machete gives more reach, and the Eli tactical machete takes a deeper kukri-style curve.
Why is the handle leather over steel instead of wood?
Because it makes the machete one piece of steel from point to butt. There are no scales to crack or loosen, and the leather wrap gives a firm grip in wet or sweaty hands. When the leather wears, it can be stripped and replaced, so the handle can be repaired indefinitely. If you prefer the feel of wood, choose the Large Book of Eli Machete.
What does the leather colour change?
It sets the colour of the leather-wrapped scabbard. Black and brown are the most film-like and hide dirt best; red, green and blue are bolder; white is the most striking and shows wear soonest. The preview shows your choice against your chosen blade finish.
Is it a real working machete?
Yes. It is forged from 5160 spring steel, hardened and tempered, sharpened, and built with the tang forming the handle. It handles clearing brush, limbing, splitting kindling and camp work. It is not an axe, though — for felling or splitting large seasoned rounds, use the right tool.
Is 920 grams too heavy?
For long sessions cutting light vegetation, it will tire the arm faster than a thin machete. For chopping wood and heavy brush, the weight is what does the work. If you want the Eli look in a lighter blade, choose our 15-inch Eli machete.
Can I choose a different blade length?
Not in this configurator, which keeps the blade at 18 inches. We make the Eli blade at 15 and 20 inches as separate products, and any other length, handle or engraving can be quoted through our custom forge service.
Can I use it for cosplay?
Yes, and choosing your own finish and leather makes it easy to match a costume. The standard build ships sharp, so check your event's weapons policy before you travel. For events and performance, add "Stage combat build — rebated edge, rounded tip." in the order note and read our stage combat standard.
Will 5160 steel rust?
Yes, if you let it. 5160 is a high-carbon spring steel, not stainless, and that is a deliberate trade: it is far tougher than the stainless steel used in most film replicas, at the cost of needing care. Wipe it dry after use, keep a light film of oil on it and do not leave it in the scabbard for months. Black coated reduces the upkeep.
