Underneath every combination is the same sword: a 22-inch double-edged, leaf-shaped xiphos blade hand-forged from 5160 spring steel, sharpened and ready for use, crowned with a swept winged guard. The blade follows the classical Greek xiphos; the wings are our own ornate design, made for collectors who want a Greek sword with presence.

The Xiphos and Its Angel Wings

The xiphos was the sword of the Greek hoplite: a double-edged blade that swells into a leaf shape before narrowing to the point, carried as the soldier's sidearm behind the spear. The leaf profile puts width and weight toward the front of the blade, which lets a relatively short sword cut hard as well as thrust. Surviving swords and vase paintings show a plain, practical hilt — a short cross-guard, a simple grip made for one hand, and a knob or disc pommel.

The Angel Wings keeps that blade and gives it a hilt no hoplite carried. The guard sweeps out and upward in two swept wings, and the grip runs longer than a classical one. It is a fantasy dress on a historical blade, and it makes this the most striking sword in our xiphos range. Which Blade Finish Suits the Angel Wings?

Handle and Fittings

Six handles are offered on the same full tang. Rosewood is our standard: dense, warm and stable. Whitewood gives a pale, bright grip that contrasts with a dark blade. Buffalo horn is glossy black and takes a deep polish, though it is the least forgiving of very dry heated rooms. The three two-material grips pair contrasting sections along the handle: rosewood + whitewood for a two-tone timber look, rosewood + horn for the darkest and richest, and horn + bone for a bold black-and-ivory contrast. Two materials wear at slightly different rates, so on a well-used sword the softer section shows handling marks first.

The fittings set the colour of the metal on the hilt. Brass is warm gold and the classic choice with rosewood. Silver-tone is a bright white metal that stays bright longest and suits a polished blade. Copper is warmer and redder, and darkens fastest into a deep brown. Use the preview — handle and metal are easier to judge together by eye.

Scabbard Colour

Every scabbard is built on a carved wooden core shaped to the blade and wrapped in leather, so the double edge is held clear of the leather. Black and brown are the most restrained; red is the boldest and the most classical in spirit; green and blue suit a fantasy or mythological theme; white is the most striking and shows wear soonest.

Blade, handle and overall length are fixed on this pattern and do not change with your selections. Weight varies slightly with handle material. Because every piece is hand-forged, small variation in weight, dimensions and finish is normal.

An Honest Note on This Xiphos

An honest note. Three things worth saying plainly. First, the blade is a classical xiphos but the hilt is not: no ancient Greek sword carried swept wings like these, and a hoplite's grip was short and made for one hand. Ours is longer, which adds control, but this is a single-hand sword at heart rather than a true hand-and-a-half. If you want a historical hilt, choose our 21-inch Greek xiphos. Second, the silver-tone fittings are a bright white metal, not sterling silver. Third, 5160 is not stainless. It will rust if left wet or stored in its scabbard; keep it lightly oiled.

How Your Order Is Made

Caring for Your Xiphos

Wipe the blade dry after handling — skin acid marks carbon steel quickly — and keep a light film of oil on it; any mineral or machine oil works. Do not store the sword in its scabbard for long periods, because the leather and wooden core hold moisture against the steel; a stand or wall mount is the better home for display. Brass and copper fittings patina with handling and polish back with any metal polish if you prefer them bright. A horn or bone handle likes a little oil or wax now and then, especially in dry heated rooms.

Shipping, Returns and Warranty

Every piece is prepared at the forge in seven to ten days, and shipping adds a further seven to ten days. Orders to the USA and Canada travel with FedEx; everywhere else ships on a DDP service, which means duties and taxes are settled before the parcel moves so there is nothing to pay on delivery. Every piece carries the Everest Forge manufacturer warranty against defects in forging and heat treatment.
