Salyani Khukuri/Kukri – Traditional Curved Heritage Blade from Western Nepal
The Salyani Khukuri (also spelled Kukri) is a historic blade that originates from the Salyan district of western Nepal. Revered for its legacy and distinctive appearance, this khukuri is one of the most iconic traditional blades in Nepalese culture. It was historically used during Nepal’s unification campaigns and continues to be cherished for its beauty and functionality.
What sets the Salyani apart is its deeply curved blade—more pronounced than most khukuris—resulting in enhanced slashing ability, better balance, and aesthetic refinement. The blade features a crescent arc with hand-etched patterns (butta) that reflect the artisan’s skill and the cultural significance of the blade.
The 12-inch high-carbon steel blade is hand-forged using traditional water-tempering methods. Its long, deep bevel provides a keen edge suitable for powerful chopping and clean slicing. The rosewood handle is slim, slightly curved, and finished with steel bolster and butt cap for a secure grip and better weight distribution.
A wooden scabbard wrapped in traditionally treated buffalo leather adds durability and historical charm. The surface is finished with embossed patterns formed using mustard paste and hand-rubbing techniques. This kukri comes complete with two utility knives — Karda (a small knife for fine tasks) and Chakmak (a sharpening tool) — secured inside the scabbard.
