Ngombe Ngulu Prestige Sword – 18-Inch Hand-Forged African Ceremonial Blade
The Ngombe Ngulu Prestige Sword is a masterfully hand-forged replica of a historic Central African weapon used by the Ngombe and Mongo peoples. Traditionally, this distinctively curved blade was employed in ritual executions and later evolved into a symbol of power and social prestige, often carried by tribal chiefs, warriors, and ceremonial figures.
At Everest Forge, we have recreated this weapon using high-carbon 5160 steel—reclaimed from truck leaf springs—and forged it by hand in Nepal using traditional blacksmithing methods. The 18-inch curved blade is water-tempered for strength and sharpened to a functional edge. A 6-inch full tang rosewood handle ensures balance and control, while a leather-wrapped wooden scabbard completes the historical tribute.
Historical Background:
The Ngulu sword has deep cultural roots among the Ngombe, Mongo, and Ngbaka tribes of Central Africa. Originally used in ritual executions, the blade’s elaborate shape served to instill fear and demonstrate the authority of its wielder. Over time, it transitioned into a prestige symbol, representing leadership, justice, and spiritual authority.
One notable Ngulu sword was brought to Springfield, Missouri in 1900 by Baptist missionary Dr. Clark. This sword was eventually donated to a local museum in 1955 by Mr. and Mrs. Paul R. Rothery, highlighting the international significance and lasting historical value of these blades.
