Double Ngulu Sickle Blade – 18-Inch Hand-Forged Ceremonial Sword | Prestige Blade of the Ngombe Tribe, Congo
This 18-inch Double Ngulu Sickle Blade is inspired by the prestigious ceremonial weapons of the Ngombe people from the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Known under several names including Ngulu, Ngolo, Ngwolo, Mbeli na Banzi, and others, this blade is often misrepresented as an executioner's sword. In truth, these intricately shaped and beautifully adorned weapons were status symbols, ceremonial objects, and sometimes even used as currency among Central African communities.
Forged in Nepal by Everest Forge using 5160 carbon steel repurposed from truck leaf springs, this modern recreation stays true to the form and function of traditional Ngulu blades. Featuring a curved, double sickle-style blade and a long rosewood handle, this ceremonial sword reflects both historical authenticity and functional craftsmanship. The sword is fully tempered and sharpened, suitable for display, collection, ritual performance, or educational use.
Historical Significance
The Ngulu blade was not primarily a weapon of violence but a mark of rank, prestige, and ceremonial power. Historical evidence and ethnographic studies indicate that these blades were worn or carried by tribal chiefs and important elders during rites of passage, dances, or as visual declarations of power and wealth. As documented by collectors and researchers like Gosseau and Elsen, the blades were often decorated with brass or copper tacks and featured engraved detailing made through specialized hammering techniques while hot and cold.
The double-curved design also shares similarities with Bango blades of the Lobala people, reinforcing its broad cultural reach in the Congo basin. Far from a weapon of cruelty, the Ngulu blade should be remembered as a symbol of African ingenuity, tradition, and artistry.
