Langes Messer Sword | Hand Forged German Medieval Blade by Everest Forge
The Langes Messer, or “long knife,” is a formidable single-edged weapon that bridges the gap between knife and sword. Favored by the common soldiers and townsmen of medieval Germany, the messer was a weapon of practicality—simple to carry, deadly in skilled hands, and effective in both combat and utility.
This hand-forged interpretation by Everest Forge features a 19-inch blade made from 5160 high-carbon steel, expertly crafted with traditional blacksmithing techniques. Tempered with water for optimal hardness and flexibility, the blade is sharpened and battle-ready. The 6-inch rosewood handle provides a solid, ergonomic grip, and the full tang construction ensures strength and balance. A scabbard is included, making this a ready-to-use weapon straight out of the forge.
Historical Background
The Langes Messer emerged during the 15th and 16th centuries in Central Europe, especially in the German-speaking regions. It was widely used by civilians, foot soldiers, and mercenaries who couldn’t afford the expensive knightly longswords but still needed a reliable sidearm. The term messer simply means “knife,” but these blades were often long enough to rival short swords.
Used in traditional German martial arts—most notably by fencing masters like Johannes Lecküchner—the langes messer was known for its half-swording, hooking, and slicing techniques, and was wielded with one hand. Its straight spine, single edge, and curved clip point allowed for powerful cuts and effective thrusts, especially in unarmored combat.
