German Langes Messer | Hand Forged Medieval Blade
The German Langes Messer is a single-edged sword historically carried by the middle and lower classes of medieval Germany. Practical, rugged, and deadly in trained hands, this weapon was valued for its powerful cutting ability and unorthodox versatility. Unlike noble longswords, the messer was accessible and effective—a perfect fusion of a working tool and battlefield weapon.
This modern interpretation by Everest Forge features a 20-inch hand-forged carbon steel blade with a full tang rosewood handle. Water tempered for edge strength and balance, it maintains the spirit of the original while being built for real-world performance—whether in the outdoors, in martial practice, or as part of a historic collection.
Historical Background
The Langes Messer ("long knife") was widely used in 15th and 16th century Germany, especially among civilians, town guards, and mercenaries. Often paired with the traditions of the German school of swordsmanship, messers were used in Fechtbuchs (fighting manuals) by fencing masters like Johannes Lecküchner and Paulus Kal.
These swords featured a single-edge design with a knife-like hilt, making them similar to modern machetes but with more advanced fighting techniques. The Langes Messer typically included a knuckle guard, large crossguard, and a blade that often flared near the tip—ideal for slashing, half-swording, and thrusting into unarmored opponents. Its versatility made it popular for both defense and daily tasks.
